Welcome to the UCL HyperMile! Our team is a group of driven students passionate about green racing.

We compete in the prestigious Shell Eco-marathon, one of the world’s leading student engineering competitions focused on energy optimisation.

Our mission is to push the boundaries of fuel efficiency, and this year, we won the 1st Place of the Carbon Footprint Reduction Award, in addition to the Data and Telemetry Award in 2023!

We are looking for talented students, across all year groups and departments, to build HyperMile’s next generation hydrogen-powered car for the 2025 competition

What do we do?

Shell Eco-marathon

The Shell Eco-Marathon is a global competition that challenges students to design, build, and drive the most energy-efficient vehicles possible. The event brings together teams from around the world, primarily from universities and technical institutions, who compete in various categories such as Battery Electric, Hydrogen Fuel Cell, and Internal Combustion Engines. Every year, over 5,000 students from over 52 countries participate in this competition, united by their passion for green racing and innovation!

The goal is not to race for speed, but to see who can travel the farthest on the least amount of energy. Teams must finish a 10-mile race within 38-minute time constraint while minimizing energy usage. It aims to push the boundaries of what is technically possible and inspire students to become engineers of future energy solutions.

Our History

The history of the Eco-Marathon at UCL began with a group of 4th-year students who designed and built our first-ever vehicle, Hydrone. In 2021, UCL Eco-Marathon officially became a part of UCL Racing, made up of passionate Mechanical Engineering undergraduates. Since then, our team has consistently pushed the boundaries of technology and innovation, competing in both the Battery Electric and Hydrogen Fuel Cell categories. We are always striving to challenge ourselves, aiming for new heights and setting ambitious goals as we continue to advance in sustainable vehicle design.

🏁 World Record Efficiency

We are developing our next car, designed to break the world record. Our ultimate goal is to showcase hydrogen propulsion by setting a new fuel efficiency world record by driving more than 6,175 km/L.
